The work-from-home lifestyle is growing and growing. This lifestyle comes with a ton of benefits, but one of the biggest is being able to have extra time with those you care about.
Dog owners everywhere are loving that they now can spend more time with their furry friends.
But what are the benefits of working with a dog, really?
In this article, we’ll explore the surprising reasons why spending time with your pet companions while working from home is actually a plus for your business.
So, grab your dog/cat/domesticated ostrich, sit down, and let’s dive in.
Why Working From Home With a Pet is Good for Your Business (4 Reasons)
Since 2020, people have begun to realize that this is an awesome opportunity for those who’d rather stay home with their families – and their fur babies.
Spending more time with your loved ones (human and otherwise) is a tremendous plus on face value, but as it turns out it actually increases your business’s success too.
Here are a few reasons why having your pet with you while working is actually going to bring your business more success.
1. Reduced Stress
Dogs (and all pets) are fantastic companions and great for reducing your stress in general. Interaction with pets has shown a huge decrease in cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone), as well as blood pressure.
Actually, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, there’s a name for the increased happiness our pets are proven to bring to our lives – “the pet effect.”
The truth is, we humans get a great boost in happiness from caring for other things.
Plus, research has already proven that remote workers have reduced stress levels when compared with in-office employees in general. Add your favorite fuzz muzzle to the mix, and get a double dose of de-stressing!
2. Increased Productivity
This one might seem like a surprise. After all, Lassie getting the zoomies in the Zoom background an be a pretty big distraction. But as it turns out, having the ability to interact with your pets reduces the amount of time you spend stressing about them while at work.
This concern reduction frees up your mind to focus on other things. No one works well while they’re distracted, and you’ll find yourself much more efficient and productive when you aren’t wasting time and energy worrying about your pet.
3. More Exercise
One of the biggest difficulties about working from home is making sure you still get out and about. With any desk job, people have trouble getting out of the sedentary lifestyle and getting the exercise their bodies need to be healthy.
A great benefit of (especially) dogs is getting exercise with them. Our four-legged friends need to stay active, and they’ll be sure to encourage you to do the same.
While working at home, it’s hard to turn down your pet’s very literal puppy-dog eyes and refuse them a walk.
Getting on the floor to play with your new kitten a few times a day is just as good! And as it turns out, getting up and away from your desk for a few minutes does wonders for your health – and your business!
4. Savings on Animal Care Costs
This one’s especially true for the solopreneurs out there. The kennel can get expensive, and even having a dog walker can tally up.
Being able to walk your dog during work breaks will reduce the need for both of these things.
Also, with that extra time saved not having to commute, you can take care of grooming yourself, rather than paying someone to do it for you.
As a lab-owner in the midst of shedding season (read: year-round), I’m thrilled about having extra time to clean up the metric ton of dog hair that accumulates every day.
How Working From Home With Your Pet Improves your Business’s Success
All of these benefits are awesome, but you might be asking yourself, how does this all translate to business success?
For one, a successful business is one that’s run by happy people. There’s a reason there’s so much talk these days about the soul-crushing 9-5 grind. It’s a rough way to live.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re feeling more relaxed, more motivated, and happier about your job, that’s a big win in every way.
In terms of numbers, when you’re feeling good, you’re more inclined to work harder.
An increase in comfort will result in an increase in productivity and efficiency. Spending this time with your pet will also make you feel more creative and relaxed, which will also help your business.
Over time, the proof will be in the pudding.
Also, as we said, any small online business will benefit hugely from saved money. If you’re spending less money on your pet via doggy daycare and the like (not to mention less gas money on a long commute), that’s extra cash that can be invested into your business’s success.
In terms of efficiency, the work from home model is really an overall upgrade.
How to Work From Home With Your Pet Comfortably
As you can clearly see, there are a ton of benefits to having a furry companion with you while you work. Having your dog at your desk-side is going to bring a lot of changes, but it will definitely result in an overall improvement.
Here’s a few tips to help you make sure your pet is as comfortable as you are working from home:
Keep a pet bed in your office.
Moving your pet’s bed into your office will encourage them to keep near you for the whole work day. Keeping them in proximity will, in turn, stop you from having to worry about mischief they might be getting up to.
(If your dog’s like mine, they probably won’t end up using the bed that much but, hey, it’s a nice gesture.)
Schedule walk breaks.
My favorite part about working from home is the flexibility to structure my schedule. A great way to make sure you and your pet both get the exercise you need is to schedule your walks for set times during the day.
Keep an eye on your treats.
It’s awesome that you’re spending more quality time with your pet, but if you’re like me, you can’t resist their charm.
Spending more time with your pet might mean you’re inclined to shower them with treats, so make sure to keep a close eye on how low that treat jar gets each day.
Set boundaries with your pet.
There’s a ton of great pros to working from home, both in general and for pet owners. It’ll take some time, but it’s important to train your dog to not disturb you while you’re working.
Keeping a schedule for walks and food (both for yourself and your pet) will help.
Keep a work-life balance.
This is a huge challenge for work-from-home, especially if you live in an apartment or similar smaller space.
Make sure to segment out your space so that you can work efficiently and without distractions. But make sure you – and your pet – can leave work behind when the desktop is turned off at the end of the day.
Overall, working from home is a great thing for many people, pet-parents and otherwise.
To recap, the reasons that working from home with your dog is good for your business are:
